I moved to Wortley from Kent in 2016, and as an active Masters swimmer, I’d joined City of Sheffield SC. I was looking for a more local pool, and one of my new neighbours told me about SCLC and the rescue and reopening of the Centre. The community focus, and the involvement of volunteer support were intriguing, and I signed up (as a swimmer of a certain vintage, a nostalgic appreciation of the pool’s 1970’s configuration also rang a few bells)!
Since I’ve been here, I’ve been increasingly aware of the contributions the Centre’s individual volunteers make to its successful operation. For myself, after being introduced at the beginning to the informal swimming group “Triathlon Training,” as a volunteer I’ve been able to provide it, and its respective successors, “Stocksbridge Thrashers” and the official Swim Fit Group – (now under the supervision of Angus), with weekly training programmes and swimming guidance.
I also volunteer at the regular Fundraising Fayres (as luck would have it, usually in the Bowls Hall with the soft archery)! While they’re superficially alike, swimming is an evolving set of SCLC members over time, but with the Fayres, it’s usually a new person each time. So similar, and always satisfying with a result, but different in their separate ways.
As an individual, SCLC has given me opportunities to contribute doing something I enjoy, and for that I’m grateful. And from what I can see, as an entity, it’s clearly providing real value to its local community.
So, onwards and upwards!
